Isabella Rossellini (June 18, 1951) is an Italian-American actress. She was born in Rome, Italy. When she was 28, she was photographed by Bruce Weber for British Vogue and Bill King for American Vogue, launching her career as a model. In addition to Richard Avedon, Steven Meisel, Helmut Newton, Peter Lindbergh, Francesco Scavullo, Annie Leibovitz, Denis Piel, and Robert Mapplethorpe, she has collaborated with dozens of other notable photographers during her career.
Numerous publications, including Marie Claire, Harper's Bazaar, Vanity Fair, and Elle, have featured her on their covers. Photographs of her were the subject of a show named Portrait of a Woman at Paris's Musee d'Art Moderne in March 1988. Rossellini's career as a model took her into the beauty industry when, in 1982, she replaced Nancy Dutiel in the United States and Carol Alt in Europe as the face of the French cosmetics company Lancôme.
Rossellini made her acting debut alongside her mother in the 1976 film A Matter of Time, playing the role of a nun for a short time. Her cinematic debut was in 1979's Il Prato, and she went on to co-star with Martin Scorsese in 1980's Il pap'occhio, directed by Renzo Arbore. White Nights (1985) was Rossellini's first American picture since her mother's death in 1982. Following this, she starred in and supplied her singing to David Lynch's Blue Velvet as anguished nightclub singer Dorothy Vallens.
