Inherit the Wind is a 1955 American drama written and performed by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee. The narrative uses a fictionalized version of the 1925 Scopes "Monkey" Trial to talk about the McCarthy trials that were happening simultaneously. The fictitious 1925 Scopes "Monkey" Trial, depicted in Inherit the Wind, led to the conviction of John T. Scopes for instructing high school science classes on Charles Darwin's theory of evolution in violation of a Tennessee state statute.
The actor playing Matthew Harrison Brady is meant to evoke William Jennings Bryan's character and views, while the character Henry Drummond is meant to resemble Clarence Darrow. Set in a central U.S. that must remain nameless, the drama unfolds in the sleepy little hamlet of Hillsboro. People usually think it's in Tennessee or Kentucky. Locations might range from the plaza outside the county courthouse to the courtroom. The event occurs during the summer.
H. L. Mencken, a reporter for The Baltimore Sun, inspired E. K. Hornbeck's persona, while Scopes inspired Bertram Cates. There were several occasions when events were significantly changed or fabricated. However, the writers clarify in an introductory note that it is not meant to be a historical narrative.
