Paula Vogel, an American writer, authored the play How I Learned to Drive. The play's first performance took place at the Vineyard Theatre off-Broadway on March 16, 1997. Vogel was honored with the Pulitzer Prize in Drama in 1998. The Perseverance Theatre in Juneau, Alaska, under the direction of Molly Smith, conceived and developed the play.
Off-Broadway, How I Learned to Drive, opened on May 6, 1997, at the Century Center For The Performing Arts. Mark Brokaw was the director, with designs by Narelle Sissons for the set, Jess Goldstein for the costumes, Mark McCullough for the lighting, and David van Tieghem for the original sound. The Vineyard Theatre previously staged the play in 1997, from February to April.
In April 1997, the play from the Vineyard Theatre, co-produced by Daryl Roth and Roy Gabay, relocated to the Century Theatre. Li'l Bit and her aunt's husband, Uncle Peck, have a tumultuous sexual relationship explored throughout the novel from her early childhood to her teens and beyond in higher education. The themes of power and manipulation are examined via the lens of automobile metaphors and the topics of pedophilia, incest, and misogyny.
