Houston Ballet Information
The Houston Ballet is a professional ballet group from Houston, Texas. The Houston Ballet Foundation runs it. With a roster of 59 dancers, the group puts on more than 85 shows annually. Regarding the number of dancers, it ranks as the fifth biggest ballet company in the US. From apprentice to corps de ballet, soloist, first soloist, principal, and finally, demi-soloist, these are the ranks in which the dancers of the Houston Ballet are placed in an ascending manner.
James Nelson was elevated from the position of General Manager to that of Executive Director of the Houston Ballet in 2012. Stanton Welch AM and James Nelson will carry out the 50th anniversary season of the Houston Ballet in 2019 and 2020. In July 2023, Julie Kent became a co-artistic director with Welch.
The Houston Ballet Center for Dance is the largest structure in the US devoted to a professional dance company, spanning six stories and comprising nine studios, with a total area of 115,000 square feet. Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Houston on August 26, 2017.
While preparing for the 2017–18 season, the Houston Ballet and Academy were left without practice and performance space when the Wortham Theater Center and the Houston Ballet Center for Dance both succumbed to flooding. But the much-anticipated Houston premiere of Mayerling by Sir Kenneth MacMillan went forward as planned because of the fearless opening of the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts.
