Amaluna is one of Cirque du Soleil’s touring shows created and directed by Diane Paulus. The show is loosely based on The Tempest by William Shakespeare. The story unravels at the island governed by the goddesses. Amaluna premiered in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
The story begins with a group of men washed up the shore. The daughter of the queen falls in love with one of the young men. The ups and downs of their love story make the primary story of Amaluna. Fun Fact: 70% of the Amaluna cast are female.
The name Amaluna comes from two names, ‘Ama,’ meaning ‘mother’ in various languages. Then ‘luna’ meaning ‘moon.’ The moon is taken as a symbol of femininity. That is why it has been selected as the inspiration for this story, and probably the reason why the majority of the cast are women. One of the very few Cirque show with such a huge presence of women.
