Bill Nye Information
William Sanford Nye (November 27, 1955) is an American television presenter, science communicator, and mechanical engineer. He is commonly known as Bill Nye. He was born in Washington, D.C. Nye went to Lafayette Elementary School and Alice Deal Junior High before receiving a scholarship to Sidwell Friends High School, where he graduated in 1973. He transferred to Cornell University's Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering in Ithaca, New York. After taking an astronomy class with Carl Sagan, his interest in science grew further. In 1977, he earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering.
After winning a Steve Martin lookalike contest in 1978, Nye began practicing standup comedy. Nye found that he loved making people laugh when his buddies invited him to do Steve Martin's imitations at parties. While working at Boeing, he began moonlighting as a comedian. He volunteered at the Pacific Science Center on weekends as part of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America. On October 3, 1986, Nye resigned from Boeing to pursue his budding comedic career.
Nye was a writer and actor on the Seattle-based sketch comedy show Almost Live! in 1986. He met John Keister during an open mic night and gave him his first big break on the show.
Following his appearance on Almost Live!, Nye assisted Dr. Emmett Brown in live-action educational segments of Back to the Future: The Animated Series from 1991 to 1993.
