Sergey Kovalev (April 2, 1983) is a Russian professional boxer. Kovalev's passion for ice hockey waned after a theft of his equipment from a locker area. He tried new sports because his family could not afford to replace his old gear. After putting hockey on hold, he trained in amateur boxing and wrestling. Kovalev began boxing in 1994 when he was 11 years old and won the middleweight juniors gold medal at the Russian Boxing Junior Championship in his amateur debut in 1997.
Kovalev made it to the finals of the 2004 Russian Senior Championship, where he ultimately won the gold medal for his team. 2005, he was at the pinnacle of his amateur career, having won the Russian and serviceman championships. He placed second at the 2006 military championship. The 2007 Russian Championship and the 2007 World Military Games in India ranked him third.
After reaching the finals of his last amateur competition in 2008, Kovalev decided to turn professional. Due to the tough competition with other boxers like Artur Beterbiev (against whom he lost 24-25), Kovalev claimed that he felt compelled to leave the national squad. After his amateur career, Kovalev recorded 195 wins and 18 losses.
