MEAC/SWAC Challenge Information
The MEAC/SWAC Challenge is an annual football game played between two teams from the two NCAA Division I conferences comprised exclusively of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). These leagues are the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). The series began in 2005 and initially matched the teams defending their conference championships.
However, in 2007, the selection process was expanded to include teams that were not the conference champions. ESPN Events is the owner and operator of the event, which is regarded as the season opener for both conferences. The game is set to take place during Labor Day weekend.
Following the game in 2022, the MEAC is now in the lead in the series with ten wins to the SWAC's five. ESPN Events owns The Challenge, which is broadcast on nationwide sports networks. Historically, it was connected to the Labor Day weekend; however, beginning in 2021, it has been shifted to take place one week earlier, during the first week of college football.
