Jermell Charlo (May 19, 1990) is an American professional boxer. On December 8, 2007, at 17, he made his professional debut with a four-round decision victory over Corey Sommerville. Beginning with a three-round knockout of Jesus Villareal on April 19, 2008, and continuing with a first-round technical knockout of Dwayne Jones in June, Charlo went on to knock out Rodrigo Villareal (TKO4) and Deon Nash (W6) before the end of 2008.
In 2009, he started the year off with a shutout four-round decision over Juan Serrano on February 28; he then won a six-round decision over Carlos Garcia on April 4; he then stopped Federico Flores Jr. in the eighth round on June 26; he then beat Vardan Gasparyan in six; and he finished the year with a second-round knockout of unbeaten prospect Abdon Lozano.
Charlo stunned the Chicago crowd in the third round by knocking out Chris Chatman with a single punch. Charlo easily won a unanimous decision over Chatman, who had previously lost only once, in 2009, through the six-round decision to 2008 U.S. Olympian Demetrius Andrade. At 1 minute and 22 seconds into the third round, he knocked Chatman out with a flush right hand to the chin. At 22, Charlo has a perfect 17-0 record with eight victories coming through knockout.
