Erik Morales Information
Erik Morales (September 1, 1976) is a Mexican former professional boxer. He was born in Zona Norta section of Tijuana. Erik Morales began boxing at the age of five under the guidance of his father, José Morales, a fighter himself. He amassed a very impressive amateur career of 114 battles (108-6), earning 11 major titles in Mexico. At the tender age of 16, Morales made his professional boxing début with a two-round knockout of Jose Orejel.
He rapidly rose through the ranks of the super bantamweight division, challenging for his first world title in 1997 after winning 26 fights, 20 by knockout, including victories over former champions Kenny Mitchell and Hector Acero Sánchez between 1993 and 1997. He contracted with promoter Bob Arum around this time. On September 6, 1997, at age 21, he won his first world championship in El Paso, Texas, by knocking out the then-WBC Super Bantamweight Champion and current International Boxing Hall of Famer Daniel Zaragoza in eleven rounds.
Another historic battle occurred in September 1998, when Morales knocked out American Junior Jones, a two-weight world champion. Including his two wins over the reigning champion Marco Antonio Barrera in 1996 and 1997, Jones entered the fight with a frightening 35-win, 0-loss record against Mexican fighters.
