American independent wrestling company Combat Zone Wrestling (CZW) was founded in 2002. Professional wrestling shows featuring a style of hardcore wrestling dubbed "ultraviolence" were first held in New Jersey and Delaware in 1998 by John Zandig and five of his students: Ric Blade, T.C.K., Lobo, Nick Gage, and Justice Pain, along with trainer Jon Dahmer. The "ultraviolent wrestling" in CZW often involves ladders, tables, steel folding chairs, thumbtacks, barbed wire, weed whacker, light tubes, glass, explosive barbed wire baseball bats, and fire.
After the end of Extreme Championship Wrestling, the business stepped in to fill the void it created among diehard wrestling fans (ECW). CZW's Cage of Death 3 event at the ECW Arena in 2001 cemented the company's position as the preeminent American hardcore wrestling promotion, and ECW soon after went out of business.
As time went on, they became one of the premier independent promotions thanks in large part to their homegrown lineup. Their "ultraviolent" style may be the most well-known, but they also showcase various other wrestling styles at their events. High-flying action, comedic moments, powerful styles, and technical wrestling are staples of virtually every show. The ultraviolent style of CZW is featured at their annual Tournament of Death performance, while the technical and aerial style is featured at their annual Best of the Best show.
