In 1995, a group of Montanans came together to host the Chase Hawks Memorial Rough Stock Invitational Rodeo in Billings, Montana, hoping to comfort the Hawks family. About 45 people worried about the state of things in Billings, Montana, one evening. Chase Hawks, age 6, was struck by a car and killed in September 1994, and the community wanted to show its support for the Hawks family. The members of this gang set off, not knowing precisely what it was that they sought to accomplish. When a local family needs assistance, the cowboy way in Montana is to stand up and help them out.
The idea for a unique invitational rough-stock rodeo with top cowboys competing on world-class bareback horses, saddle broncs, and bucking bulls originated from a group of people who wanted to do something to help others. Despite its tragic origins, the Chase Hawks Memorial Association was established on the tenet of optimism. As the slogan for this rodeo puts it, "crafted in Montana by Montana people." It exemplifies the warm and welcoming character of Montanans. The rodeo celebrates the community, highlights the importance of assisting one another, and spreads the principles of the legendary cowboys and local heroes who helped create it.
