Canelo Alvarez Information
Santos Saúl "Canelo" Álvarez Barragán is a professional boxer from Mexico. He was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. Since his trainers, father-and-son combo Chepo and Eddy Reynoso, had difficulty locating acceptable junior opponents, Alvarez went professional at 15, shortly after winning the Junior Nationals.
On January 20, 2006, in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Alvarez won his third professional fight, defeating Miguel Vázquez, the future IBF lightweight champion. In a rematch held on June 28, 2008, Alvarez again prevailed against Vázquez. When he and all five of his siblings battled on the same card, they made history.
Alvarez, the new WBC light middleweight champion, successfully defended his title against Ryan Rhodes, the current European light middleweight champion and the No. 4 ranked fighter in the Ring. After twelve rounds, Alvarez stopped Rhodes with a technical knockout on June 18, 2011, in Guadalajara, Jalisco.
The Boxing Writers Association of America, ESPN, Sports Illustrated, and The Ring magazine chose Alvarez as the best boxer of 2019. In 2019, Alvarez defeated Rocky Fielding for the WBA (Regular) Super Middleweight Championship and climbed to the super middleweight division.
Alvarez moves forward to light heavyweight and wins the WBO Light Heavyweight Championship by knocking out Sergey Kovalev in 2021. This makes him the first four-division world champion in boxing history.
