The American Athletic Conference (or simply The American) hosted its inaugural women's basketball tournament in March 2014. UConn's Huskies defeated Louisville's Cardinals to claim the league's first championship. After this, the Huskies went on to win the next five consecutive AAC Women's Basketball Tournaments.
The victor of the AAC Women's Basketball Tournament captures the conference title and receives a bye into the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Tournament. The best 64 teams in the nation compete for the title in the annual tournament, also known as NCAA Women's March Madness.
In addition to their multiple regular-season and tournament AAC championships since the conference's inception, the UConn Huskies have also claimed the Women's March Madness tournament. The USF Bulls, the Cincy Bearcats, and the UCF Knights are three other schools that have had success in the AAC Women's Basketball Tournament.
