Y La Bamba Information
Y La Bamba is a Latin indie alternative/experimental band. The current lineup of the group consists of Luz Elena Mendoza, Ryan Oxford, Julia Mendiolea, Miguel Jiménez-Cruz, Zack Terán, and Isabeau Keonaona Waia’u Walker. Mendoza was born in San Francisco, California. Still, she was heavily affected by the music of her native Michoacan, Mexico, where both her father and mother were born: in Aguililla and Coalcolman, respectively. Rancheras, corridos, boleros, and huapangos are all part of this genre. Specifically, “Corridos” was “quite well present in many of the bands who played in quinceaneras, weddings, and parties,” Mendoza told Billboard.
My music was influenced by the acoustic five-piece ensembles that play grupero, Tex-Mex, and norteo. Born in Southern Oregon, Mendoza founded the original lineup of Y La Bamba after relocating to Portland. Upon turning 37, Mendoza relocated to Guadalajara, Mexico. Before going on a mission in India, Mendoza studied theology in New Zealand. Upon her return to Oregon, she performed the songs that would launch her solo career at open mic events in Ashland and Portland. At one of these gigs, she met Y La Bamba’s bassist and vocalist, Ben Meyercord. Alida St., the first studio album of Y La Bamba, was released in 2008. It was low-quality because it was homemade.
