Renowned for their tight grooves, lively energy, and understated flair, Ann Arbor, Michigan-based funk band Vulfpeck, Comprising Jack Stratton, Theo Katzman, Joe Dart, and Woody Goss, the band was founded in 2011 by a group of University of Michigan music students. Old-school funk and soul greatly influence Vulfpeck's sound; inspirations from musicians including James Brown, Steely Dan, and the rhythm section of the 1960s and 1970s session players abound.
The band became well-known by deftly using YouTube and social media to publish albums and music videos straight to its followers. One of their most noteworthy successes was publishing Sleepify in 2014, a completely silent CD meant to generate streaming income, which enabled them to pay for a free concert for their supporters.
Often featuring guest musicians, including frequent friend Cory Wong and vocalist Antwaun Stanley, Vulfpeck's live shows are vibrant and full of exciting improvisations. Among their most well-known recordings are "Dean Town," "Back Pocket," and "1612."
