Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra Information
Established in 1842, the Vienna Philharmonic is regarded as one of the world's most illustrious orchestras. The Musikverein is the home of the Vienna Philharmonic in Austria. The Vienna State Opera's orchestra is chosen among its members to form this ensemble. As part of the rigorous selection procedure, each candidate must prove they can play in the opera and ballet for at least three years.
Following the completion of the probationary term, the musician is eligible to apply to the board of the Vienna Philharmonic for a position in the orchestra. Most orchestra has a mandatory retirement age of 65 and a 30-year service requirement for a full pension. To mark the half-century after the concentration camp's liberation, an orchestra played Beethoven's Ninth Symphony on May 7, 2000, near the location of the camp in Austria.
All members of the orchestra and soloists—Ruth Ziesak, Angelika Kirchschlager, Vinson Cole, and Thomas Quasthoff—performed without compensation and were not applauded after the performance. Simon Rattle was the conductor. The World Health Organization honored the orchestra in 2005 with the title of Goodwill Ambassador. The Israelitische Kultusgemeinde Wien Bestowed the Marietta and Friedrich Torberg Medal onto Clemens Hellsberg in 2013 (Viennese Israelite Community).
