The multi-octave voice of Flint, Michigan native Tunde Olaniran, who has led rock and electropop projects, worked with dance and hip-hop producers and self-produced his solo records (including the standout 2015 album Transgressor), defies easy classification. His songs often feature hard-edged bass evocative of U.K. grime and combine electronic beats and synths with distorted guitars and bizarre samples (he often uses non-musical sounds like birds in his compositions).
His songs speak to those who feel disenfranchised by mainstream culture because of his self-assured, socially concerned message. Olaniran's 2018 album Stranger reached a wider worldwide audience because of the success of his 2015 album Transgressor, which was propelled by positive word of mouth, an exciting live show, and the usage of one of his songs in a TV commercial. While still a child, Tunde Olaniran lived in Germany, Nigeria, and England before moving back to his native Michigan as a teenager.
He competed in the first Chicago Idol competition in 2003, where Kanye West was also a finalist. Taste This! was Olaniran's rock band, and in 2005 they released their debut album, Back for Seconds. In 2006, Olaniran released a self-produced album titled Infinite Modulation, and two years later, he teamed up with Brian Preczewski to create the electropop duet Stereoluxxx. In 2008, the duo's self-released album Eros entered the market.
