Toronto Symphony Orchestra Information
Canadian orchestra established in Toronto, Ontario, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO) performs classical music. The TSO has performed at Roy Thomson Hall since its 1982 season, after having played at Massey Hall from 1906 to that year. Meanwhile, the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra (TSYO) is under the management of the TSO. In April of 1923, the TSO—then known as the New Symphony Orchestra—performed its inaugural concert at Massey Hall with 58 members. The orchestra was created in 1922.
Gustavo Gimeno made his TSO guest conducting debut in February of 2018. In light of this performance, the TSO announced that Gimeno will join the organization as music director beginning with the 2020–2021 season under a five-year starting contract. In response to the epidemic, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO) stated in July 2020 that it would not perform as planned in its 2020–2021 concert season. Instead, it will host smaller-scale concerts at several sites throughout Toronto.
Matthew Loden's resignation as CEO of the TSO was announced in July 2021 and took effect on September 22, 2021. Mark Williams was named TSO chief executive officer in January 2022 and took over in April 2022. The TSO extended Gimeno's tenure as music director through 2030 in November 2022.
