Toby Lightman Information
Toby Lightman is an American singer and songwriter. In his early years, Lightman took up the violin. She started singing after a friend encouraged her to enroll in a vocal workshop class at Cherry Hill High School East, where she was an orchestra member. After Lightman sang a gospel cover of Simon & Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water" in front of an audience and received rave reviews, she decided to pursue a singing career after graduating from high school in 1996.
While attending the University of Wisconsin–Madison, Lightman taught herself how to play the guitar. Lightman's manager, Ari Martin of Nettwerk Management, started working with the band in 2004. Lightman was signed to Lava Records, a division of Atlantic Records, by Jason Flom after he performed a solo showcase for record company executives and reps. On March 30, 2004, Lava distributed Lightman's debut album, Little Things. Producer Peter Zizzo was responsible for the album's creation.
On July 20, 2004, a deluxe edition of Little Things was released, featuring a cover of Mary J. Blige's 1992 smash hit single Real Love as an extra track. A music video was shot to promote the song, released as the album's second single. On their 2005 album Stories of a Stranger, Lava Records artists and friends O.A.R. invited Lightman to guest star. Lightman collaborated with Marc Roberge, lead singer of O.A.R., on their hit single "The Stranger," from their album that peaked at number 40 on the Billboard 200.
