The Met Orchestra Information
The Metropolitan Opera is a New York City-based opera company that performs at the Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center. The Metropolitan Opera Association, a non-profit organization, manages the company, with Peter Gelb as general manager. The Metropolitan Opera Theatre was founded in 1883 as a rival to the previously established Academy of Music opera house. It opened in a new facility on 39th and Broadway the following year. In 1966, it relocated to the new Lincoln Center location.
The Metropolitan Opera is North America's largest classical music organization. From late September to May, it staged around 27 different operas each year until 2019. Each week, up to seven performances of four different operas are staged in a rotating repertory schedule.
During the early years of the Met, the company would perform a dozen or more opera performances in Philadelphia each season. The number of performances rapidly decreased until the final Philadelphia season in 1961 had only four operas.
