The celebrities who appear on the show hide their faces through face masks wearing costumes head to toe to conceal their identities from all the other panelists, audience, and contestants. The premiere of the series was featured on January 2, 2019, on Fox, where Nick Cannon was the host.
The Masked Singer is based on King of Mask Singer, which is a South Korean show. Craig Plestis, who is the executive producer for the show, explains that while his visit to a Thai Restaurant, he first discovered the format. Endemol Shine North America produced the first season of The Masked Singer. The production transitioned for the second season, under the Fox network, a new in-house studio.
The format of The Masked Singer can be understood easily. A group of celebrities participates in the show wearing costumes, anonymous to each other for over a series of episodes. The competitors are paired off for a face-off competition in each episode. Votes are taken from the audience and panelists. The winner is safe for a week, and losers are eliminated.
The costumes for the celebrities are designed by Marina Toybina, who is an Emmy Award winner. She has designed the costumes by her mind, through multiple sources that inspired her. In 2020, Marina Toybina has won the Costume Designers Guild Award for the category of “Excellence in Variety, Reality-Competition, Live Television. Hollywood movies inspired raven and Rabbit of the first season.
