The Grass Roots Information
The Grass Roots is an American band. The group's current lineup consists of Mark Dawson, Joe Dougherty, Larry Nelson, and Dusty Hanvey. Midway through 1965, P.F. Sloan and Steve Barri, a songwriting and producing duo based in Los Angeles, came up with the moniker "Grass Roots" (then spelled as one word "Grassroots") for a band project. Dunhill Records (owned by Lou Adler) signed Sloan and Barri and had them write several songs to cash in on the emerging folk-rock trend. "Where Were You When I Needed You," recorded by Sloan and Barri, was one such composition.
The Grass Roots' cover of Bob Dylan's "Mr. Jones (Ballad of a Skinny Man)" was played for the first time on Southern California radio stations like KGB (AM) in San Diego and KHJ (FM) in Los Angeles in late 1965. After Sloan expressed his admiration for Dylan's demo acetate of the song, Dylan agreed to let him record a cover version.
Dawson, Dougherty, Hanvey, and Nelson participated in the Happy Together Tour once more in 2012 and have been on the road ever since, playing alongside such classic rock acts as John Kay and Steppenwolf, Tommy James and the Shondells, The Buckinghams, and Herman's Hermits featuring Peter Noone. In the deleted sequences from season two of The Office ("Booze Cruise"), Creed Bratton briefly discusses his time spent with the Grass Roots.
