Tamburitzans Information
Dr. Pierce obtained employment scholarships for three young artists and established "St. Thomas Tamburitza Trio." In 1937, they traveled east with their musical variety performance, stopping in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Because of the city's rich cultural offerings, the ensemble has settled on Duquesne University as its permanent home through a work scholarship agreement.
A reporter at Duquesne University in the late 1940s came up with the name "Duquesne University Tamburitzans" for this newly created organization. Over the past eight decades, the Tamburitzans ensemble has broadened its repertoire to encompass a wide range of international folk dance and music. Eighty-plus years, multiple international tours, and hundreds of performers, the Tamburitzans' presentation is an annual ritual for some and a wonderful new surprise for others.
Year after year, generation after generation, the Tamburitzans enchant audiences around the country with lavish costumes and remarkably adaptable musicians, singers, and dances. These bright young artists are full-time college students who have made it their mission to carry on the Tamburitzans' tradition of showcasing cultural traditions worldwide.
