Summer Slam Information
Since 1988, WWE, the largest professional wrestling promotion in the world, has hosted SummerSlam, a professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) and livestreaming event. In professional wrestling, "The Biggest Party of the Summer" is only surpassed in importance by WrestleMania, the company's premier event. Along with WrestleMania, the Royal Rumble, Survivor Series, and Money in the Bank, it is one of the company's "Big Five" annual events. Since 2014, the event has also been shown on the WWE Network, and beginning in 2021, it will also be broadcast on the Peacock.
On August 29, 1988, the first-ever SummerSlam took place at New York City's Madison Square Garden. SummerSlam moved venues twice between 2009 and 2014, first to the Staples Center in Los Angeles and again, beginning in 2015, to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York City. SummerSlam has occurred every August since its start in 2001 and will continue to do so through 2021. The 2022 SummerSlam was the first and only time the event was staged in July; it would return to August the following year, 2023.
In 2020, during the height of the pandemic, WWE held their first ever PPV inside their bio-secure bubble, the WWE ThunderDome, for SummerSlam. SummerSlam 2021 was billed as the "biggest event of 2021" when the promotion began live touring with fans in July 2021 after WrestleMania 37 had to be held at a lower venue capacity.
