Sulene Information
Sulene is the stage name of Brooklyn-based singer Sulene van der Walt, not to be confused with Sulene Fleming of Brand New Heavies and Dimitris & Sulene. She's best known for her work as a solo artist, where she makes upbeat indie pop, but she's also composed for film and television and performed as a touring guitarist for artists like Nate Ruess, Betty Who, and Candy Hearts under her full name.
The South African, who began playing the guitar at 14, is a 2013 graduate of the Berklee College of Music in Boston with a degree in film scoring. She worked on the 2014 film The Humbling by Barry Levinson and contributed to the score of the Liev Schreiber crime drama Ray Donovan.
Meanwhile, she's been on the road as a supporting act and scoring the short films The Weight of Wind (2016) and Strength and Fortune (2017). (2017). Van der Walt's first single as Sulene, the synth-pop tune "What We Had," was released in January 2017. In the spring of that year, Sleep Well Records released her first EP, Strange, which she had written while on the road.
