Starover Blue Information
Starover Blue is an American experimental dream pop band. After meeting in the San Jose State University music department, founding members Dirk Milotz (synthesizer, guitar) and Kendall Sallay (lead vocals, guitar) established the band in 2007. Milotz sought a degree in composition, while Sallay studied operatic voice performance. They opened up with a "indie-folk" tangent.
By 2009, the band's sound had changed, becoming more layered, experimental, and analog synthesizer-heavy. As the band's main lineup of Sallay, Milotz, Joel Zelaya (ambient/lead guitar), Max Rogers (bass), and Jerald Bittle (drums) became more stable, they began to stray from folk instrumentation and acoustic arrangements.
The band's name was changed to Starover Blue in the middle of 2014 in honor of a character from Vladislav Nabokov's Pale Fire. The band's second LP, Spacegeist, was recorded and produced by the current lineup before splitting up when Sallay and Milotz moved from San Jose to Portland, Oregon. Early in 2016, Sallay and Milotz relocated to Portland, OR, where they reconstructed the band's line-up by adding Kyle Polensky on bass and James Alton on drums. Spacegeist had its online premiere on PopMatters on August 12, 2016, and was formally released on August 26.
