Sona Jobarteh Information
Sona Jobarteh (1983) is a British composer, singer, and multi-instrumentalist. She was born in London. She performed at her first festival when she was four years old, and her early career highlights include a debut at London's Jazz Café. She shared the stage with legendary jazz vocalist Cleveland Watkiss in Vienna in 2002 and later appeared at London's Barbican Center as part of his opening act for Cassandra Wilson. She also participated in Damon Albarn's Mali Music Project, which was later played for Jools Holland.
Oumou Sangaré, Toumani Diabaté, Kasse Made Diabaté, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra are just a few artists with whom Jobarteh has shared the stage. Jobarteh regularly performs with her brother Tunde Jegede's African Classical Music Ensemble, which has toured the United Kingdom, Ireland, Africa, and the Caribbean.
Two compositions by Jobarteh may be found on his albums Malian Royal Court Music and Lamentations, and another on his album Trance Planet Vol. 5. (released on Triloka records, Virgin in the US). She is an instrumentalist, co-writer, singer, and producer for the renowned spoken-word artist HKB FiNN. Her first album, Afro-Acoustic Soul, had tunes with social and romantic undertones. This album draws from various musical styles, including those that might fit in on more standard European radio formats.
