Smile Empty Soul is an American post-grunge band that is from Santa Clarita, California. The band’s current line-up consisted of Sean Danielsen (guitar and vocals), Derek Gledhill (drums), and Ryan Martin (bass). Gledhill and Martin departed from the band in 2005 and 2017, respectively. Now Danielsen remains the only founding member and is also the band’s primary leader, frontman, and songwriter.
When Smile Empty Soul was formed, its original members were attending different high schools in the Santa Clarita area. It was originally a three-piece group. In their starting years, they played numerous hometown gigs. Smile Empty Soul ventured to the Sunset Strip. After some time, the band gave a demo to John Parker of the Los Angeles indie label called ThroBack Records. Later on, the band signed a record deal with Lava Records of Jason Flom.
Smile Empty Soul released its self-titled debut album on May 27, 2003. The album was produced by John Lewis Parker and mixed by David J. Holman. The album was certified gold in March 2005 with sales in excess of 500,000+. The band released its second studio album entitled Anxiety on September 27, 2003. Smile Empty Soul has worked with several record labels including Two Disciples Entertainment, Pavement Entertainment, eOne Music, F.O.F Label Group, Bieler Bros, Lava Records, and ThroBack.
Other notable studio albums that Smile Empty Soul has released include Vultures (October 24, 2006), Consciousness (August 25, 2009), 3’s (May 22, 2012), Chemicals (October 1, 2013), and Oblivion (May 25, 2018). The band has also released a few extended play albums such as B-Sides (2007), Shapeshifter (April 1, 2016), The Acoustic Sessions. Volume 1 (February 22, 2019), and Sheep (December 6, 2019).
