Sir Bryn Terfel Information
Bryn Terfel (November 9, 1965) is a Welsh concert and bass-baritone opera singer. He was born in Pant Glas, Caernarfonshire. He went as "Bryn Terfel" instead of "Delme Bryn-Jones," another Welsh baritone when he entered the professional music scene. From an early age, he showed enthusiasm for and skill with music. A family friend started him with some traditional Welsh melodies to learn to sing.
He traveled to London in 1984 to study singing under Rudolf Piernay at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where he had already won several competitions. He competed in the Young Welsh Singer of the Year competition hosted by the Morriston Orpheus Choir Supporters' Association and won that year (1988). He received the Gold Medal and the Kathleen Ferrier Memorial Award when he graduated in 1989. The same year, he also won the Lieder Prize despite placing second to Dmitri Hvorostovsky in the Cardiff Singer of the World competition.
Terfel made his operatic debut with Welsh National Opera in 1990 as Guglielmo in Cos fan tutte, and he made his English National Opera debut in 1991 as the title role in The Marriage of Figaro. In the same year that he made his U.S. opera debut as Figaro at the Santa Fe Opera, he made his international operatic debut as the Speaker in Mozart's The Magic Flute at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels.
