Shane Koyczan Information
Shane Koyczan (May 22, 1976) is a Canadian spoken word poet and writer. He was born in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. To his credit, he made history in 2000 by claiming the Individual Championship at the National Poetry Slam held on a seashore for the first time by a Canadian poet. Tons of Fun University, a Vancouver, British Columbia spoken word, "talk rock" trio, was founded by him, American slam artist Mighty Mike McGee, and fellow Canadian C. R. Avery. (T.O.F.U.).
Canadian filmmaker Maureen Judge made an installment of Heart of a Poet for the Bravo! Network in August 2007 that focused on Shane Koyczan and his work. Koyczan is the author of several works, such as the poem collection Visiting Hours, the novel in verse Stickboy, the memoir Our Deathbeds will be Thirsty, the anthology To This Day: For the Bullied and Beautiful, and the novel A Bruise on Light. The Guardian and the Globe and Mail included Visiting Hours in their 2005 Best Books of the Year selections.
The Canadian Tourism Commission commissioned Koyczan's "We Are More," and Ivan Bielinski's "La première fois," both revealed on Parliament Hill in Ottawa during Canada Day celebrations on July 1, 2007. Koyczan performed a version of his work at the 2010 Winter Olympics opening ceremony in Vancouver. Koyczan contributed to the composition "Tragic Turn of Events - Move Pen Move" by Vancouver musician Dan Mangan's Roboteering EP.
