Shad Information
He was born in Kenya but spent his childhood in London, Ontario, before attending Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, where he made his performing debut. His sister entered him into a 91.5 The Beat contest called Rhythm of the Future, and he won. With the prize money, Shad was able to record his 2005 debut album, When This Is Over, which received high recognition for its sincere lyrics and emphasis on social themes.
He joined Black Box Recordings in 2007, and his career took off after the release of 2009's The Old Prince, which was nominated for a Juno. The next year, he released TSOL, and the single "Rose Garden" from that album helped him win his first Juno Award for Rap Recording of the Year. The smash song "It Ain't Over" was released by him in 2012, taken from the EP Melancholy and the Infinite Shadness.
His 2018 album, A Short Story About a War, received critical acclaim for its unfiltered treatment of injustice and greed, cementing his status as one of Canada's most revered rappers. He has shared the stage with notable artists like Jessie Reyez, A Tribe Called Red, and Serena Ryder at major festivals like Squamish Constellation and Toronto's Field Trip.
