Josiah Wise (July 9, 1988) is an American experimental musician. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland. As a young child, Wise was heavily influenced by classical and gospel music, thanks to his participation in the church choir. His mother wanted to enroll him in the Maryland State Boychoir when he was 11. In this way, he was exposed to the world of classical vocal music for the first time.
After graduating from the University of the Arts, Wise immersed himself in the neo-soul music scene in Paris and Philadelphia. However, his tone was thought to be more akin to opera than that of his neo-soul contemporaries. After relocating to New York, Wise released his debut single, "Curiosity of Other Men," in 2014.
Blisters, Wise's debut EP, was released in 2016 after he was signed to Tri Angle Records in 2015 due to the success of the song. Producer The Haxan Cloak, who has worked with Björk and The Body, contributed to the EP's sound. Blisters were met with universal acclaim upon its release. Wise started recording his first studio album, dirt, in 2017, working with producers such as Clams Casino, Katie Gately, and Adele's frequent collaborator Paul Epworth. Upon its release on June 8, 2018, the album was met with widespread critical acclaim.
