Sarah Chang Information
Sarah Chang (December 10, 1980) is a Korean-American classical violinist. She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1979, Chang's parents emigrated to the United States from South Korea so that her father could pursue graduate study in music at Temple University. Her mom went to Penn to study writing. The Bruch Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor was Chang's audition piece when she was five years old and was accepted to the Juilliard School.
When she was three years old, her mother taught her to play simple piano melodies with just one finger. She received a violin with a 1/16th scale for her fourth birthday. Philadelphia Orchestra concertmaster Norman Carol heard her play at a dinner party and that she met with music director Riccardo Muti. In her audition for the New York Philharmonic when she was eight years old, Muti and Zubin Mehta were present. Both of them agreed to schedule her right away.
Chang gained instant notoriety and became well-known worldwide, eventually headlining as many as 150 shows annually. She was named one of the Top Eight Achieving Women in the United States by Newsweek in 2006. The British pianist Ashley Wass accompanied Chang at a 2007 recital at Carnegie Hall. In March of 2010, Chang performed the first movement of Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor, Op. 26, by Max Bruch at the University of Southern California. In August 2010, she had a performance at the Hollywood Bowl.
