Samford University, located in Homewood, Alabama, is home to the Samford Bulldogs football program, an intercollegiate American football outfit. The Southern Conference (SoCon) is the region where the team competes at the Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) level of the NCAA Division I Football Championship. In 1902, Samford University placed its first football team on the field.
In the years leading up to the 1965 season, when Howard College was officially rebranded as Samford University, the team was known as the Howard Bulldogs. Before 1957, Howard was situated in Birmingham, Alabama.
Pete Hanna Stadium, located in Homewood and accommodating 6,700 spectators, has been the location of the Bulldogs' home games since 1958. Since the beginning of the 2015 season, Chris Hatcher has been the head coach of Samford.
