Salina Symphony Information
The Salina Symphony is committed to enriching people's lives through the performance and instruction of art music. The North Central Kansas Symphony, as one of the region's best musical ensembles, presents six subscription performances each season, as well as an annual patriotic outdoor concert on the grounds of the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum.
Eric Stein created the Salina Chamber Orchestra in 1955, and its debut performance took place in 1956. In 1965, the orchestra was renamed the Salina Civic Orchestra Society and affiliated with Marymount College. The symphony was renamed the Salina Symphony in the 1980s and temporarily performed at the Municipal Auditorium before relocating to Kansas Wesleyan University, where it remained for more than a decade. The Symphony Orchestra relocated to the fully restored Stiefel Theatre for the Performing Arts in 2003. From 2004 until 2019, Ken Hakoda was the music director and conductor. In 2019, Dr. David Littrell was appointed as interim music director and conductor.
Students in the Symphony's Youth Education Program range from kindergarten through high school. The Youth Symphony Program, founded by Mr. Stein in 1961, has grown from one group to three, engaging students from over 30 different local/area schools. Each season, members of the Youth Symphony, Junior Youth Symphony, and Preparatory Orchestra provide two concerts. The Salina Youth Choir, which joined the program in 2014, performs various concerts throughout the year, including the Salina Symphony Christmas Festival.
