Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Information
The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) is a London-based British orchestra. The RPO was formed in 1946 by Sir Thomas Beecham. In its early years, the orchestra was able to acquire lucrative recording contracts and prestigious engagements such as the Glyndebourne Festival Opera and Royal Philharmonic Society concerts. The RPO's fortunes plummeted after Beecham's death in 1961. The RPO struggled to stay afloat until the mid-1960s when a report from the Arts Council proposed giving public funding.
Cadogan Hall in Chelsea became the RPO's first permanent London base in 2004. The RPO also performs in the Royal Festival Hall, the Royal Albert Hall, and other locations throughout the United Kingdom and abroad. Vasily Petrenko has been the RPO's music director since the start of the 2021-2022 season.
In 1950, the RPO became the first British orchestra to tour the United States since the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) in 1912. Beecham had long wished to bring the LPO to the United States after being unable to do so in the 1930s. In just 64 days, he organized 52 concerts in 45 cities. Brain's biographers Gamble and Lynch described the trip as a big success.
The orchestra made its maiden appearance at the Proms in August 1952, under the direction of Basil Cameron. Two years later, Beecham made his Proms debut, directing the RPO in a program of Berlioz, Schubert, and Sibelius.
