Rockford Symphony Orchestra Information
The Rockford Symphony Orchestra is a professional symphony orchestra based in Rockford, Illinois, United States. The orchestra is now in its 80th season and is Illinois' third largest orchestra. The Rockford Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1943 and began giving performances in 1934. It was directed by Andreas Fugmann, the Rockford College music department dean, until 1940. The orchestra paused throughout WWII but restarted in March 1943 under Arthur Zack's direction.
The Rockford Symphony Orchestra is one of Northern Illinois' most important cultural institutions, performing over sixteen concerts each year. The Rockford Symphony Orchestra (RSO) was created in 1934 to commemorate Rockford's centennial, and it was incorporated in 1943. Arthur Zack, the RSO's first music director, and manager, commanded the orchestra for 27 years.
Zack was the music director and manager of the then-civic orchestra until May 1970. Dr. Crawford Gates was named music director of the Orchestra after Zack's term. During his tenure, the orchestra began to bring in more professional musicians and guest artists. In 1991, Steve Larsen was named the orchestra's fourth music director. The RSO has enlarged its repertoire and attracted musicians of the greatest caliber under his leadership and with the board's vision.
