Robert Earl Keen (January 11, 1956) is an American country entertainer, singer, and songwriter. He was born in Houston, Texas. During the summer before his first year of college at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas, Keen began playing guitar on his own shortly after graduating from Sharpstown High School. He began by studying classic country hits from a songbook. After earning his BA in English in 1978, he and his friends—including his childhood best friend—began performing bluegrass and folk music and creating songs.
Keen declared his intention to cease traveling and public performances in January 2022, with an end date of September 2022. The "I'm Coming Home Farewell Tour" was his last tour, culminating in a three-night run at Floore's Country Store in Helotes, Texas, on September 1-3. On September 4, for about 2.5 hours, about 3,000 people came to the final performance.
One of Keen's admirers was Petty Officer First Class Jason Workman, who had died on August 6, 2011, along with 29 other Brave Americans, in Wardak Province, Tanji Valley, Afghanistan. This admirer wrote Keen in August 2011 on this incident. Keen performed his iconic song "I'm Coming Home" during the funeral for POFC. Keen wanted to express his gratitude to a fan who gave his life for his nation, so he paid for his airfare.
