Enrique "Ricky" Martín Morales is a Puerto Rican singer, songwriter, and actor. His career spans multiple musical styles, including Latin pop, pop, dance, reggaeton, and salsa, attesting to his famed musical flexibility. Many titles have been bestowed upon him, but the "King of Latin Pop," "King of Latin Music," and "Latin Pop God" are among the most illustrious. After making his TV commercial debut at the tender age of nine, San Juan-born Martin joined the popular Puerto Rican boy band Menudo at twelve.
His solo career kicked off in 1991 while he was still signed to Sony Music Mexico. His first two albums, Ricky Martin (1991) and Me Amaras (1993), were primarily comprised of ballads and helped him earn widespread popularity across Latin America. The success of Martin's third album, A Medio Vivir (1995), contributed to his growing popularity across Europe. His first major success on a global scale was the chart-topping track "Mara," which featured a fusion of many Latin music styles.
His fourth album, Vuelve, established his position as a global superstar (1998). The album produced the number-one singles "Vuelve" and "La Copa de la Vida" and awarded Martin his first Grammy. In particular, Martin's performance of the latter at the 41st Annual Grammy Awards is widely regarded as a watershed moment for Latin music everywhere. Ricky Martin (1999), his first album in English, debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200.
