Richmond Symphony Information
The Richmond Symphony is a Richmond, Virginia based orchestra, founded in 1957. It is the largest performing arts organization in Central Virginia, as well as the leading regional orchestras in the nation. The Richmond Symphony organizes a full-time orchestra that includes more than 70 musicians and 150 volunteer members. Around 200,000 people enjoy their live concerts each performance. Their fans also enjoy the radio broadcasts by the Richmond Symphony. The Symphony has educational outreach programs that educate over 55,000 teachers and student participation.
Internationally renowned musicians have performed with the Symphony including Cleo Laine, Jubilant Sykes, Bruce Hornsby, Marvin Hamlisch, Aretha Franklin, the Dave Matthew Band, Ray Charles, Tony Bennett, Julian Lloyd Webber, Andre Watts, Jason Vieaux, Elena Urioste, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, William Grant Still, Isaac Stern, Dmitry Sitkovetsky, Joseph Silverstein, Gil Shaham, Shanghai String Quartet, Leonard Rose, Christopher Riley, Jean Pierre Rampal, Itzhak Perlman, Jessye Norman, Edgar Meyer, Yo-Yo Ma, Kate Lindsey, Ani Kavafian, Denyce Graves, Pierre Fournier, Emerson String Quartet, Aaron Copland, Aldo Ciccolini, Yefim Bronfman, Carter Brey, Joshua Bell, Mason Bates, and Claudio Arrau.
In 1971, The Richmond Symphony Chorus was founded, and it gave its first performance under Robert Shaw (Director). For the inaugural season, The Richmond Symphony only performed three concerts. The Symphony also launched its nationally recognized initiative called "Big Tent," which brings concerts and festivals to the community throughout the Richmond region.
