Regina Symphony Orchestra Information
Frank Laubach established what is now known as the Regina Symphony Orchestra (RSO) on December 3, 1908, under the name Regina Orchestral Society. After a temporary merger with the Regina Male Voice Choir in 1924 to become the Regina Philharmonic Association, the Regina Choral and Orchestral Society reverted to its autonomous existence in 1926, presenting its first regular season (1927-1928) under W. Knight Wilson.
Once consisting of only 50 musicians, by the 1960s, the orchestra had expanded to include 70. From its founding in 1929 until its relocation to the Saskatchewan Centre for the Arts in 1970, its home was Darke Hall on College Avenue. In a typical 37-week season, the orchestra plays more than 30 concerts for an audience of more than 30,000.
In September 2008, the RSO became the fourth orchestra in the world to receive this honor from the heir to the Canadian throne, King Charles III, in his capacity as Prince of Wales. The orchestra musicians that will play at his coronation in 2023 were chosen.
