Ray Chen Information
Ray Chen (March 6, 1989) is a Taiwanese-Australian violinist. In 2008, he was the first to win the prize in the International Yehudi Menuhin Violin Competition and Queen Elisabeth Competition in 2009. Chen was born in Taipei, Taiwan. He started learning violin at the age of four. Within five years, he learned all ten levels of the Suzuki Music Education, which are popularly known as the Suzuki method in Brisbane, Australia. At eight, Chen was also invited to play solo with the Queensland Philharmonic Orchestra. He also received an invitation to perform in the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan, for its opening celebration.
Chen was named "Young Space Musician of the Year" by Australia's 4MBS in 1999. Being the youngest and most brilliant musician, he received the Sydney May Memorial Scholarship from the Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB). Chen received his Licentiate Diploma in Music with distinction from the AMEB when he was 11. He received first prize in the Australian National Youth Concerto Competition (NYCC) when he was 13 years old. He also won first prize in the Australia National Kendall Violin Competition in 2005.
In 2010, Sony Classical signed Chen. He's recorded the César Franck Violin Sonata, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's and Felix Mendelssohn's violin concertos, and more. Chen is also well-known for his presence on the internet. On his eponymous YouTube channel, he has posted videos about violin playing, and he has cooperated with the YouTube classical music comedy group TwoSetViolin on several occasions.
