Peter Gabriel (13 February 1950) is an activist, singer, songwriter, and record artist born in Chobham, Surrey, England. Gabriel became famous as the founding vocalist of the psychedelic rock band Genesis. After he left Genesis in 1975, "Solsbury Hill" was the first song of his successful solo career.
Gabriel has spent a lot of his time promoting world music. In 1982, he helped start the WOMAD event. He has kept his True World Records label to make and promote world music.
Peter Gabriel left Genesis in 1975 to start a solo career that would change how music was made. His first solo record, called "Peter Gabriel" but often called "Car" because of the cover art, showed the world how innovative and genre-bending his music was. Songs, including "Solsbury Hill," became instant hits and showed how good Gabriel was at making songs that made people feel something.
Gabriel has become notable for changing how music and motion pictures are made. His "Sledgehammer" video changed the way animation was done and got a record nine MTV Video Music Awards. Further videos, including "Shock the Monkey" and "Big Time," showed how important visual drama was to him as a part of his music.
Gabriel worked with the band Arcade Fire to compose their new track, We, which came out in 2022. He sang backup vocals on the song "Unconditional II (Race and Religion)."
