Paula Julie Abdul (June 19, 1962) is an American singer, performer, choreographer, actor, and TV personality. The Jacksons spotted her when she was working as the chief choreographer for the Laker Girls, a group that performed for the Los Angeles Lakers after she had been a cheerleader for the team since she was 18 years old. Abdul became a choreographer during the peak of the music video boom after working on Janet Jackson's videos.
With seven million copies sold in the U.S. and more number-one singles from a debut album than any other, Forever Your Girl (1988) was one of the most successful debut albums ever. Not one, but two singles from her 1991 album Spellbound—"Rush Rush" and "The Promise of a New Day"—became top 40 hits. At the time, Abdul was tied with Diana Ross for third place among female solo performers with six number-one hits on the Hot 100.
Along with Light Balance Kids, Brian King Joseph, and Tyler Butler-Figueroa, Abdul surprised Cowel in the fourteenth series finale of America's Got Talent. Abdul became a member of the Ohio production team for the 2023 Broadway musical How to Dance. She was a celebrity Wheel of Fortune participant as well.
