Paul Shaffer Information
Paul Allen Wood Shaffer (November 28, 1949) is a Canadian multi-instrumentalist, comedian, author, actor, singer, composer, and songwriter. He was born in Toronto, Ontario. Shaffer studied piano as a young boy, and with his schoolmates in Thunder Bay, he played the organ in a group called the Fabulous Fugitives as a teenager. Later, he played at several places in Edmonton and the interior of British Columbia with the "Flash Landing Band."
He received his education at the University of Toronto, where he started performing in bands around the local bars, developed an interest in musicals, and finished his studies in 1971 with a Bachelor of Arts in sociology. When Stephen Schwartz asked Shaffer to be the musical director for the Toronto production of Godspell, starring Victor Garber, Gilda Radner, Martin Short, Eugene Levy, Dave Thomas, and Andrea Martin, Shaffer's musical career officially got underway.
Later, in 1974, he played piano for the Schwartz Broadway production of The Magic Show. From 1975 to 1980, he was a house band member on NBC's Saturday Night Live (except for a brief departure in 1977). Even though Shaffer was playing the piano and seemed to be leading the band, Howard Shore was given credit for being SNL's musical director, and subsequently, Howard Johnson took over as the band's conductor.
