Pacific Symphony Information
The Pacific Symphony Orchestra was established in 1978 by Keith Clark in Orange County, California. The orchestra distinguishes itself from other symphonies by concentrating mostly on advancing contemporary composers. Thanks to its support of young, upcoming composers, the orchestra has twice received an ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming.
Philip Glass and Michael Daugherty are two contemporary composers whose works are often performed by the Pacific Symphony. The orchestra has also taken up bringing opera back to Orange County and has staged many concert-opera events, including Puccini's "Tosca" in 2014. Since the orchestra started its program, Music Unwound has included theme components to its concerts to improve the music experience and enthrall the audience.
Besides supporting upcoming composers, the Pacific Symphony has award-winning educational initiatives, including the Class Act resident program. Listing the program within the top nine outstanding orchestra education programs in the nation, the National Endowment for the Arts and the American Symphony Orchestra League have Copland's "An Outdoor Overture" and Michael Daugherty's "Mount Rushmore: III. Theodore Roosevelt" are among the Pacific Symphony's most popular pieces.
