The Oshima Brothers could have played it safe with a follow-up to their self-titled debut, keeping the album's acoustic, folk-based sound. Instead, the Oshima brothers, Sean and Jamie, envisioned a grander, more expansive work that displays their eclectic tastes in art. Dark Nights Golden Days (coming 1 April 2022) has the brothers' multilayered, genre-bending sound that manages to be vintage and modern, expansive and personal, lush and graceful. It's a musical suite that makes you want to dance in the supermarket and get lost in the woods.
The Portland, Maine, duo's DIY ethos is reflected in their latest album, Dark Nights Golden Days. Sean and Jamie wrote all the songs, and they both sang and played almost every instrument on the album, which Jamie also engineered, recorded, and mixed. All of the videos for Dark Nights are produced independently by the brothers. Having been composing music together since they were young, the brothers are comfortable with this hands-on approach to the creative process. For the first 10 seconds of the album's first track, "Burning Earth," they sing a counting song they wrote as kids.
The 17 songs on the CD highlight the duo's individual and combined talents and distinctive approach to working together. Sean, the singer/songwriter, writes heartfelt compositions that combine lightheartedness and emotional authenticity, while Jamie creates a unique sound out of various instruments, loops, and other musical textures. A soft acoustic song gets a jolt from an electronic beat. A distorted guitar warps a catchy pop song. A plucked fiddle provides an R&B beat.
