Orchestra Toronto Information

Orchestra Toronto was established in 1954 as The Bennington Heights Community Orchestra. The orchestra's first season only had one concert under Assen Kresteff’s direction in 1955, with the initial ensemble consisting of 55 members. The two-year-old orchestra was later conducted by Albert Aylward, a 25-year veteran of The Toronto Symphony string section. In 1964, the conductor seat was taken up by Milton Barnes, a former conductor of the St. Catharines Symphony.

In the 1960s, Orchestra Toronto grew to 63 musicians, and it was incorporated as the East York Symphony. This era also marked the beginning of a six-season tenure as conductor for Orval Reis. Some of the other conductors who served the orchestra are Harvey Sachs in 1973-74, a renowned violinist Eugene Kash in 1974-75, David Gray in 1975-77, Stephen Riches in 1977-78, and David Ford in 1983-90.

Douglas Sanford succeeded David Ford in the 1990s. He served the Orchestra Toronto from 1991 to 2002 and is well-known for calibrating the orchestra to new heights. Orchestra Toronto played for the Canada CIS Foundation in 1993. The performance took place for Mikhail Gorbachev, the former president of the Soviet Union. The orchestra also took part in a joint project with The Royal Conservatory of Music during the 1995-96 season. The orchestra was renamed to its current title in 1998, with a complement of 90 musicians. The orchestra plays a full range of repertoire, becoming Canada’s largest and most admired community orchestra.
