Orchestra Iowa Information
Orchestra Iowa is a symphony orchestra based in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The symphony orchestra was established in 1921 as the Cedar Rapids Symphony Orchestra. Since its inception, the orchestra has a full season, performing a chamber series, a popular series, a fine arts series, and performances with the Cedar Rapids Opera Theatre and Ballet Quad Cities. The current music director and conductor of Orchestra Iowa is Timothy Hankewich. It principally performs at the Paramount Theatre, which is located in downtown Cedar Rapids.
Orchestra Iowa regularly performs concerts at Iowa City West High School and Brucemore. The symphony orchestra performs the chamber series at the Coralville Center for the Performing Arts. The first concert by the orchestra was held on April 23, 1923, in the Sinclair Auditorium at Coe College. They played concerts at Veterans Memorial Coliseum by 1928, with the orchestra even continuing to play during the Great Depression and World War II.
The administrative offices and the school of the orchestra moved to the new Symphony Center in 2004. It includes the Rockwell Collins Recital Hall along with music studios. The former musical directors of Orchestra Iowa are Joseph H. Kitchen (1923–1952), Henry Denecke (1952–1970), Richard Williams (1970–1981), and Christian Tiemeyer (1981–2006).
Orchestra Iowa has partnered with nationally syndicated From the Top radio program, Iowa Public Radio, and Iowa Public Television to present more people with symphonic music and music education programs. It became the orchestra for the Cedar Rapids Opera Theatre in 2009.
